I use aluminum whenever I can because they're lightweight (and cheap). But I've experienced aluminum rods being a little more flexible than steel, so if for instance I have to mount 3x Preston motors under my lens for a zoom that doesn't have a lens support… I would prefer steel. (Ideally though, I'd rather use aluminum rods, use a lens support, and separately mount my motors above the lens so gravity works in my favor.)

@Phil's idea of Titanium is great, I hadn't heard of those and I'm excited to try them out.
