Card write error

Roni Beraha

Hi there.

In our shoot today, in the middle of a take, alexa mini stopped recording and this warning appeared 'card reliability at risk. Please back up the data and erase the disk.'

So we changed the card. Everything that was recorded was there.

After that everything went smoothly until it happened again with a different card.

Any explanations are welcomed.

Best regards

Hi Erol,

I had this happen to me a couple months ago. We were shooting down in Florida with the Amira. While I know you were shooting with the Alexa, it’s possible the incidents are related.

What seemed to be happening for me was that the battery mount plate was slightly loose and when you would get tired and set down the camera to rest, it would put just enough pressure on the battery or connection to have a brief lapse of power.  When the camera booted back up sometimes this screen would pop up. I recall once when I was still rolling on a long long take, the producers started talking about the next scene and we set down the cameras to stretch. Camera had to reboot and same warning screen popped up. Being the last shot of the show and no cards around, late at night, I had to just keep going on the same card. No issue or lost data but scary as all get out. I’d advise to check the connections and screws holding the battery in place. Again, just what was happening to us with another camera by the same lovely Arri Group. Maybe the lesson is to never set down your camera, but that thing gets heavy with a big Canon zoom. Maybe your battery voltage got just a tid bit too low.

On a side note, I’ve seen this sort of issue seemingly come from buffering problems when a card write speed is slower than the data flowing in. Worth a check even though it was on Canon cameras.

Good luck ,

Hi Erol,
your issue reads as something that ocurred to me almost a year ago. Despite the fact that a loose power connection will always kill the main power to the camera itself and therefore obviously a take. I understood that your Mini was still powered when it cut the take, correct? Nevertheless back to my case: I called up Arri Service for assistance. They held a programming glitch responsible for the recording stop. The next SUP solved the issue. At the end they could not really figue out the circumstances directly. They assumed a certain and even simple combination of personal user settings must have caused it.
After updating the software it never happened again. That was three SUPs ago. You should save a log file then upgrade the Mini and your wireless remote system (just in case too) to the newest SUP which is 5.1. If all that fails please contact Arri Service in Munich (+49.89.38092121) and send them the log file.
I hope it will help.
All the best,
Tobias

The camera has been sent to Arri. I will share the details of the outcome.

Thank you for your inputs

Did this issue involve 256GB Lexar cards? Purchased recently?

I had one go bad on a shoot a month ago. Also I spoke to another DIT who was on a shoot with five new cards, and all five failed. Seems like Lexar may have had a bad batch recently.

They were indeed.

The cards have been changed as well.
