Has anyone had the issue where the internal NDs in the Alexa Mini won't stop cycling? Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

Did you try turning it on and off again? I know it sounds simple but usually works to solve problems like that.

Hi

Did you put the nd change in one of side keys on the left side? If you did, probably the key is stuck and keeps changing the internal nd. Just take if off from the shortcuts.

I remember having this issue with an Alexa Mini rented through BorrowLenses back in February of 2017. It was the end of the day and we were capturing some sunset shots on a MoviPro when we opened up one ND they started cycling and would not stop. The button was not stuck as far as we could figure. Cycling power did not resolve the issue. As I remember it had to be sent to ARRI for service requiring a certain level of technician or something like that. We were not subjecting the camera to any harsh treatment so that was not the cause.

Hi Ashley,
unfortunately the internal ND module is defective and needs to be replaced. The only way to save your shooting day is to turn the camera off and power up again and hope the cycling stops. But the rental house must service the body and the sensor unit! Good luck.

Hi Julie,
Have you completed basic / simple troubleshooting?

If not, start with a check for a stuck shortcut button. Also try swapping the VFM cable to see if there's a damaged cable involved.

Check to make sure you don’t have any buttons assigned to ND. May be a flaky button.

Aloha Ashley,

Not to scare you but I believe Tobias is probably correct.
This happened with one of our Amira's. Had to be sent to ARRI. Camera was one month out of warranty.
Repair cost $22,000.
The entire sensor block needed to be replace.
Hopefully yours will fare better.

Hi Juli, yes unfortunately Bill and Tobias are correct here.
I had this happen on a rental just a week ago. Had to send it back to Arri to have the entire ND assembly replaced.
I did have some success with rebooting until it ceased to occur and could shoot with it temporarily. But the problem did reoccur so it’s a short term fix.
Best of luck.

Thanks, Ashley. I did reboot it, and that did not resolve the issue.

Hej Juli

We had this happen a couple of times on both Amira cameras and Mini's.
one time, we found that the ND button was a bit worn, and actually turned slightly to much to one end and caused the camera couldnt unterstand where it had to be. Made sure to set if precisely on one of the ND's, turned of the camera and turned it on again and it worked.
Dont think that is the problem though.

2 times we had Mini's with the same problem you have, and we had our technician disassembling the complete ND system and found the smallest little dust inside, that caused the Sensor in the ND-system to think it was "somewhere else" and kept searching for the correct spot, according to the knob.

If the rental house has a certified Alexa Mini technican with skills and nerves he should be able to fix it, otherwise it is an ARRI Repair.

So I cant give you a quick-fix for this.
