Locked What should CML test in 2023?

Adam Wilt

We’re about to plan our 2023 tests, and we’re interested in what you’d like us to focus on. Should we compare cameras, look at lenses, or assess advances in LED lighting? We’ve set up a simple online form to collect responses, so please let us know what you think.

Thanks,

Locked CML statement on the death of Halyna Hutchins.

CML Admin

We at CML are shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of
cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. While the authorities work to
establish what happened, we would like to encourage everyone who works
in the film business to always voice their concerns on safety at any
time, so another loss can be avoided. As professionals, we always
strive to complete the daily schedule at our best, regardless of
limited resources and insufficient rest. As artists, we always give
our heart and soul to the story we are putting on screen. As human
beings, we always care for our fellow crew members, talent, and anyone
else on set, and we should always protect people who trust us: because
we are professionals, artists and humans.

Alternatives to real firearms should be used on set whenever possible,
always adopting all necessary safety measures to avoid another tragedy
like this ever happening again. Working hours should be balanced with
necessary rest. The sufficient number of competent and experienced
people should be provided for the task, along with appropriate tools
to do our job properly and safely. Nobody should be rushed in a way
that safety checks are skipped. Ever.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Halyna Hutchins family and friends, and
to everyone affected by this huge loss. A professional artist and
wonderful human being is no longer with us. This should never happen
again.

Geoff Boyle NSC FBKS

July 20th 1950 – October 5th 2021

Geoff Boyle was born in a council estate in the Northeast of England in 1950. At eight he was given his first Brownie 127 camera, which started him on lifelong image-making. He dropped out of his final year in art school to work as a stills assistant at the studio used as the location for “Blow Up”, working mostly in fashion and advertising. He also worked as a stills photographer covering music for notorious underground magazine Oz.

One day in 1973 he was asked if he knew anyone who could film a concert, and of course he did! He switched to film work entirely, shooting news, documentaries, and music promos for everyone from Bowie to Zeppelin. In 1985 he moved to commercials, and by the '90s Kodak said he was one of 10 cinematographers shooting 80% of national spots in the UK. After 20 years in commercials he focused on long-form drama, from the digital production “Mutant Chronicles” in 2006, to multiple 3D projects, the series “Wallander” shot on REDs, and action film “Streetfighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” shooting 3-perf 35mm, among others. In the process he garnered awards from SMPTE, BKSTS, BSC, ACS, and NSC.

In 1996, while bored late one night in a hotel room during the middle of a shoot, he started the Cinematography Mailing List, which has grown to over 12,500 members worldwide. He has also taught workshops in the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of the West of England in 2013. He was always eager to exploit new technologies, but always in service to the image: “F*** the numbers!” was his rallying cry whenever people would obsess over resolution or bit rates instead of looking at the picture, along with “‘good enough’ is not good enough and ‘close enough’ is miles away from good.”

Geoff died Tuesday October 5th in Zoetermeer, NL after a long and feisty battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Deborah.

And by the Cinematography Mailing List.

Adam Wilt

Geoff Boyle says farewell after nearly 25 years of running CML.

“On Wednesday I will ramble about the beginnings of CML and how we have changed over the years and how we need to change more.

“I'll undoubtedly ramble about all kinds of things and have even less fear of offending people now that I have nothing to do with running CML and anything I say will be my personal beliefs and not the responsibility of CML :-)

“Please join us, it should be fun!”

Locked New facility for Sponsors

Geoff Boyle

We had a Zoom management meeting and decided to allow sponsors to send newsletters but limit the amount sent.

They will need to be in the form of a message to an appropriate list and that the amount allowed to be sent will be limited according to sponsorship level.
Gold Sponsors will be allowed to send one newsletter per month, Silver sponsors every 2 months and Bronze sponsors every 4 months.

As always we do not share membership data with anyone, we do not allow access to our membership data, we don't track users other than in very general terms, ie OS used, screen size, country, pages accessed etc. All this data we use is anonymised so we just get percentages.

An important omission from my last post was that it would make the changeover much easier if those of you who support us via PayPal with subscriptions were to change to Patreon.

We really value your support and the independence it gives us.

Locked Changes in the near future to CML

Geoff Boyle

Because of health issues and an unclear future after 24 years of running CML I am now handing over to a group of people who will be responsible for CML in the future.

The public face, i.e. those talking to sponsors and cinematographers societies etc, will be Franz Pagot AIC, Roberto Schaefer AIC ASC, Mark Weingartner ASC.

Technical running of CML will be the responsibility of Adam Wilt.

Our bookkeeper, his description I’m going for CFO 😊, is George Hupka.

Mick van Rossum NSC and Adam Wilt will be in charge of all camera and lens testing.

Jessica Gallant will continue to be our west coast listmum and Indy film person.

Manny Suys will continue as European listmum.

David Mullen ASC and Tim Sassoon will continue as valued advisors.

This handover has been happening in the background for 3 months now and should be finalised by the end of January.

This does not mean that I will not be here or that I’ll not be involved. I’ll be just as much a GOMIB as usual!

Locked People who supported CML in 2020

Geoff Boyle

I send out a thank you every year but this has been a difficult year for everyone.
I really appreciate the support of all the people listed below, there are more than in any other year.
It's been a year where we have lost corporate sponsors as the effects of Covid bite but individuals have come to our aid more than ever.
This year we have 13,001 subscribers today and 151 people from that total have helped to support CML.

The corporate sponsors make testing and web discussions and visits to conferences and show's possible.

You are the people who pay for the discussion lists and the website, the heart of CML.

Thank you...

Locked A reminder that CML is 80% email...

Geoff Boyle

This is for those of you who are used to using the many other systems around that are primarily web-based.

CML is not like that, we are predominantly email-based.

Once you post a message 80% of the people on that forum/list have the message, there is no ability to recall or delete it.

You CAN delete the message from the web interface but that only means that 20% of the members don't see it even if you delete it immediately.

So, be careful about what you post...

Locked CONDITIONS OF MEMBERSHIP of CML - Cinematography Mailing List

Geoff Boyle

Joining the CML signifies that you accept the concept of an unrestricted exchange of ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. by peers; and that you will not take any legal action of any kind against the CML or any CML member for expressing their opinions on the CML.

(Also, keep in mind that the CML does not necessarily endorse the ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. made by members of the CML.)

Joining the CML also signifies that you agree to treat your peers with the same courtesy and respect that they will give you. While I recognise not everyone will agree with the ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. expressed on the CML, unprofessional behaviour such as personal attacks, threats, unfounded criticism, etc. will not be tolerated.

All messages must be signed with name, job description and location

This enables other people to know whether they can physically help you for one thing
You will not post the same message to more than one list.
You also agree to respect the copyright of these messages and not to reproduce them in any way without the express permission of the Listmums.

Violations of these conditions will result in you being permanently removed from the CML.

HELPFUL HINTS :

You may post as soon as you have been accepted as a member, but it is advisable to watch and wait at first to see how the group operates, your first few messages will be slightly delayed to give the listmums a chance to check them anyway.

Please keep your postings short and to the point (not everyone has unlimited Internet access), respond privately to postings that would not be of interest to all subscribers, and post no advertising without permission.

Remember that all members receive each message posted on CML. I suggest that you check that the message is going where you want it to, ie to the lists and not privately. It can be very embarrassing otherwise!

Again, please keep your messages as brief and to the point as possible - resist the temptation to orate to a captive audience, or speak beyond your experience

Keep your quoting to the absolute minimum; we need to bear in mind that cinematographers on location may face bandwidth issues, there is a filter working that will bounce your entire message if you quote too much.

Feel free to use a smiley or similar symbols in your messages to convey playfulness, humour, etc. - especially when your intuition warns you there is a chance of your posting being misinterpreted.

If you're a film student, refrain from posting questions if you can get your information from an instructor, a lecturer or a textbook - many questions can be answered in the ASC manual, Professional Cameraman's' Handbook or the Hands-on Manual for Cinematographers. If students abuse the system then access for ALL students will be withdrawn.

When posting, please make sure that you address it to the relevant list ie for CML-general mail to cml-general@... for CML-AC mail to cml-ac@... etc.

Also when posting if you're replying to a digest please change the subject line to the one from the original message. Otherwise how the hell do we know what you're talking about!
