35mm projection in Los Angeles and New York
Daniel Henríquez-Ilic
I am looking to project a 35mm print (with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound) of a 9 minutes short-film in Los Angeles and New York. This is not a commercial projection; but rather a private projection. Please recommend theaters in both Los Angeles and New York areas, that could be rented per hour, for this kind of projection.
Many thanks. Daniel Henríquez Ilic Filmmaker / Photographer

I don’t know if they still have film projectors in place but it’s worth checking with them. Fotokem, of course, in Burbank (smallish screening rooms, though) Mark Weingartner LA-based DP

Well, there's always the Loewe's in Jersey City. It's a little bit big...
I suspect it will cost a lot to four-wall the place just because of the HVAC costs... but they have good 35mm projection and the last I looked they had staff that weren't film-wreckers. I'll second the recommendation of the Fotokem screening rooms and also suggest the Billy Wilder Theatre at UCLA. I see a lot of places that have 35mm projection in the booth around here, but not so many that actually maintain the equipment and have staff that are competent to run it. --scott Scott Dorsey Kludge Audio Williamsburg VA.

In Los Angeles: Check with the American Cinematheque which runs the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and another theater in Santa Monica. The Egyptian has a large theater with 35/70 mm changeover and Dolby, and a smaller screening room on the ground floor. The AC does rent facilities for events and screenings. The main theater is been used as a screening room for 70 mm dailies, among other things. In New York City: Check Anthology Film Archive, Second Street and Second Avenue. If Anthology can't help they likely know who could. In both cities, check with Technicolor and Deluxe to see if they maintain screening capability for 35 mm with Dolby 5.1 If what you need is more screening room size, that might be appropriate and less costly than renting an entire theater. You might also find possible locations in the AMIA Supplier directory: I hope this is helpful. Dictated into and Sent from my iPhone, which is solely responsible for any weird stuff I didn't catch.

The Spanish 'Halogenuros' project film is interesting, I have seen it before, at a much higher resolution, incredible quality. It was one of 1st attempts, as far as I know, made to scan in high resolution a Super-8 Vision 50D color negative (provided then in Super-8 cartridges from Pro8mm in Burbank) with excellent results. The camera used was a Beaulieu 4008 ZMII Super-8 camera with the famed Schneider Optivaron 1.8/6-66mm zoom lens, but 35mm Zeiss Master primes were also used, I believe, via a PL to C mount adapter. So, this was an ambitious project, where green screen is also used in some scenes, and also a comparison with scanned Super-16 negative. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1265089/videoplayer/vi332923417?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_1

Thank you Bengt F. "Halogenuros" is part of a technical research project about Super-8 and 2K Digital Intermediate. The research received initial funding from FONDART, a cultural fund from Education Ministry of Chile in 2004. As you mention, we were able to use for some sequences, the Pro8/01 stock back as early as November 2005, just few weeks after Kodak released the Vision2 50D (5201) stock. The camera was an ex-Beaulieu 4008 ZM II upgraded by Pro8mm in Burbank, and called "Pro8mm Classic". A PL to C Mount adapter was used and the best Super 35 lens we could use at the time was Carl Zeiss Ultra Prime on one sequence (the second sequence of the dancer, with blue screen). We also used on one sequence the Schneider Optivaron 1.8/6-66mm. The blue screen work was done using Rosco Digicomp blue fabric.
The footage was all shot in Chile, and then was mainly developed in Megacolor, Sao Paulo and Gama S.A.I in Santiago de Chile. The footage was then scanned at Park Road Post, in New Zealand via a Spirit Datacine to 2K DPX RGB 10-bit Log. The 2K DI uncompressed post-production was done in Chile with a Quantel eQ (QColor) system and the film-out to 35mm was done at Weta Digital, NZ, via an Arri Laser to Kodak 2242 intermediate and then printed to Kodak Vision 2383 print. I am grateful of all the support from great people like Jony Sugo (Megacolor), Maria Mayor (Gama), Jon Newell (PRP), Pete Williams (Weta), Phil Vigeant (Pro8mm), the crew (Gaffer Francisco Urzúa, 1AC Cristián González S) and more, that made this project possible. I have attached a frame, that shows Super-8 Vision2 100T with a Carl Zeiss lens (intended for Contax) I am now preparing sort of a sequel, updating the results to new stocks, optics and digital film post-production, but the target is the same: a 35mm print. I have been testing recently, CW Sonderoptic Thalia, Master Prime, and Cooke S4/i. I plan to shoot the second part within few months, hopefully. Lots of commercial screening rooms around. Googling “screening rooms los angeles” will get you a nice, long list. Adding “35mm film” to the search terms shortens things up considerably. Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema is mentioned...
