16*9 with 9*16 Framing for Fx9

Roni Beraha

Hi there.

I have a job coming up where the producer wants to shoot 16*9 and 9*16 for instagram.

I said it is one or the other and proposed that we shoot 16*9 and have another frame guide 1:1 for instagram.

Hee sent me a pic today as he wants to frame like this.

I am not sure it is doable and I don't know what numbers I should write for the User Box settings.

I will appreciate it if anybody can guide me and correct me if I am wrong.

Hello Roni,

I had a recent shoot where i had to draw those aspect ratios for the producer to understand different aspects for the same shot on different sensors (Alexa mini, Mini LF, Alexa 35)

We finally opted for the Alexa 35 for choice of lenses and resolution. I just sent those drawings to my DIT and he created the frame lines on the Alexa frame line tool (https://tools.arri.com/flt/index.html?_ga=2.253360204.45119542.1663088728-1246306793.1663088728)

I hope this helps.
Cheers,

On the F5 and FS7, 9:16 with User Box is 269 x 152, so try that.

As a side point, I wonder how much all this ‘dual framing’ is hurting sales and rentals of anamorphics?

There’s been a few projects recently that I wanted to use anamorphic but can’t because someone in marketing is insisting on a 9:16 deliverable also!

Interestingly enough, The launch video for Atlas Mercury shows them being used sideways for square-ish delivery which looks weird.

Maybe they believe 1.5x can help bridge this gap?!

There’s a great online tool that can give you the user box settings for the FX9. I can only assume that it will be the same for the FX9.

That's actually one of the better concepts I've seen, compared to the default "frame everything in the centre so we can just crop"  -  This way you can actually create a more interesting 16:9 frame and then the vertical version becomes "dead centre boring."   You could do different framelines for subjects on the left and right of frame.

Of course you can also use an offboard monitor to generate a second set of framelines.

*Edit

Meant to say for the Venice, not sure if it works for the FX9
