WAS: A7s remote head NOW: PDAF

If you follow this route, make also sure you check the lenses for PDAF-compatibility.

What do you mean by this?

Either a Lens has Auto Focus capability or Not. The Type of Auto Focus makes no difference. Phase Detection Vs Contrast Detection.

An AF lens on a A7S will simply not be as snappy or positive as on a A7R type. Contrast Detection AF requires hunting, Phase Detection is more positive.

Typically a Phase Detection equipped camera also employees Contrast Detection for those times when PD is not as well suited.

I found out the hard way that not all lenses have “PDAF compatible” firmware. For instance the new A7Mk3 offers hybrid-AF with PDAF, but my SEL24-70 4.0 lens does not support it apparently and therefor I can’t enable it in the camera. So I am stuck to contrast detection focus. Hence my suggestion to check if the lens is PDAF capable.

Cheers,

Martin

Interesting … thanks.

One cool thing about Fujifilm is that they are always updating their cameras and lenses. All of a sudden my X-T2 has FOCUS STACKING !!!

Sigma offers a lens Dock for updating their firmware.

Hopefully Sony will offer an update … otherwise, it’s another reason I don’t like Sony. Poor human/machine interface and illogical Menu structure. But they truly are the Masters of Low Light!
