FS7ii and greenscreen

Alex Metcalfe DoP

Hi, I know there has been a fair bit of discussion on the FS7 and greenscreen ( and yes Geoff, I have looked through the archive!) but I have a specific question to see if anyone has experience with this combination. Was going to be shot on RED Gemini but now looks like FS7ii with extension back and Atomos Shogun. I have never recorded out to an Atomos via the extension back and was wondering if anybody had taken the RAW 4K feed through post with greenscreen material. We won't be needing the dynamic range of RAW so is that still the best way to deliver to the post house? We are shooting full body shots of people walking around to be put into a 3d cgi environment. I will test myself but does anybody have any good pointers to act as a foundation for me? I would ideally shoot at 50P to minimise motion blur but the Shogun only does 30P in 4K RAW. Anybody have experience of motion blur key at 25P and best shutter angle to compromise between motion blur and judder? Thanks. Alex

Not much advice on the green screen except to say last time I shot I went with 25p and a 90 degree shutter and everything keyed nicely. The Shadows (which had some noise) were a bigger issue for keying.

I have to say the choice of FS7 II and Shogun sounds nuts though. Why not hire a Convergent Design Odyssey, then you can record 4k 50p cDNG Raw? Drop to an FS5 if you need to save money (or even FS700) it has the same sensor so Raw is pretty much identical as far as I’m aware.

Oh and best to ETTR with Sony’s weird 12 bit linear Raw.

They want to use their own kit - saves a whole line in the budget, I'm talking to the post team next week as my feeling is that this line will just be moved to the post/grade end! I will talk to them about the convergent design as that seems a small cost and will bring real benefits.

Yes to ETTR, get as much into the shadows as I can.

Dear Friends,

I want to second Colin’s comments.

With the Odyssey7Q or Odyssey7Q+, and our Raw Bundle, you can put the FS700, FS7, FS7 Mark II, FS5 and FS5 Mark II in any Raw Frame rate, and then record in the Odyssey in either Raw or Apple ProRes 422 (in HQ, 422, LT or Proxy).

But, more importantly, we have built the Odyssey so that you can eliminate the noise in the in the shadow details.

We recommend that you shoot in S-Log 2, then overexpose by two stops, and use our Sony_EE_SL2_L709A-2 LUT in the Odyssey.

By overexposing by two stops, the shadow details will be recorded as mid-range values which avoids the noise. Then our LUT displays the image down two stops so you see a normal, properly exposed image on the Odyssey.

Then you can use our 3D LUT in post to reduce the exposure by two stops. The normally noise shadow details will then be clean.

I can provide detailed instructions for this process. Just send me an email and I will send you our document.

This is a proven technique that I have recommended to hundreds of people.

Respectfully,

Hi,
I owned an fs7 with raw output and fs5 as well with the ODessy 7q+.
Great combo for the money, shots docens of commercials with them and as well as B camera for Alexa. I tried the Atomos but I prefer the odessy all the way for image evaluation and the luts.
Done green screen with it and always, or almost always used the -1 lut to over expose a tad or the -2 lut that comes with the odessy . works amazing.
You should be more than fine image wise. If you do high speed on the Fs7 it used to have at least some time back a huge problem with the raw output in that mode, where you really need to overexpose it. BUt never had any problems with the fs5.
