There's this:

$600

Probably won't hold much more than a DSLR, but great for practice. Most likely also cheaper than a simulator

Ron Dexter has a tutorial on how to build a practice head out of milling machine parts- but that may end up costing $600 or more if you factor in labor.

While your at it, check out the rest of Ron's site. It's chock full of useful production tips. Great resource.

I know Ruben Sluijter is currently making a VR wheels system for training purposes.
The beta version was at the BSC show and was pretty amazing.

He made the shot assistant app on the App Store a few years back and is a camera op also.

His insta is steadiman90, I don’t think there is a website yet but you’ll get the idea from his thread. Not sure when it’ll be ready though...

Hi James.

I ended up buying an actual geared head, a CP Mini-Worral.

Not very expensive and even better than using a simulator.  Use the real thing !

I got it originally to train on as geared heads are hard to come by (and even hard to get producers to hire) in Australia.

It was good enough that I’ve even used it on jobs and have since loaned it to others wanting to train.

The CP Mini Worral is probably the bare minimum of useable, but you can get a regular Worral head for even less for training purposes.

Also, better to practice on real things.  I never really got the whole laser pointer write your name or run a maze scenarios. I used to strap a small handicam to it and then followed people around or tried to track cars driving up the street.  Zoom in to increase the degree of difficulty !
