High Speed on a budget, or not.

pressuresound@...

Hello,
I was asked for camera options for 200+fps production the other day.
In the past I had good results with an FS700+Odyssey recorder when going over 100fps,
but it was always a bit of a hustle, breaking cables, settings beeing off and it's just 200 or 400.
After a bit of research, I am more confused then before,
I had no chance jet to work on "propper"HS camera such as Viper or Phantom, should I push for those?
Or go with the external recorder solution?

Here's what I need:
200+fps, can be burst-mode for at least 15sec
S35 sensor, no window down
at least 10bit, better RAW footage.
must fit in gimbal, steady- or wirecam
the shoot is day/ext, skintones are important.

I hope that's not a too lazy post ;-)
Thanks for any hints

Hi.

You didn’t specify resolution.

Alexa Mini can do 200 FPS in HD PRoRes 444 (12 bit)

I guess an Alexa isn’t low budget for you but then again, I can’t think of many options that can do it for less.

F5/F55- 180 fps s35 10-bit
Alexa Mini - 200 fps s35 10-bit

These cams fit most of your specs.

They have both been out for a while and you can probably talk someone into a deal.

Hello Tobi - I have had good results shooting 2k raw at 240 fps with a F55 and ASX-R5 recorder.   This does require the 2k OLFP.

Hi Tobi,

Don't have an answer for you... but do have a brilliant app suggestion that I use a lot. Has a great filter section so you can tick all the boxes you require and are left with the options.

I have nothing to do with the making of this app... I just use it.

If you decide to go with the F5 or F55, make sure to get one with the 2k OLPF filter. The Sonys get pretty funky above 60fps if you're using the full S35mm sensor.

But get the OLPF and they're probably the best bang-for-buck you'll find for HFR.

Thanks everybody so far, good insights!
I wasn't aware that the Alexa Mini goes beyond 120, so I cut the whole Arri family out...
Not anymore, I guess.
I will suggest the F5 and F55, but I guess the director is not going to like their blacks.
Anyway, now I have three proper options to suggest, thanks!

Oh, since I forgot, it's an imagefilm, 90sec one-take, HD should be all right for the client.

Thanks again, late suggestions are still greatly welcome!

Amira goes 200fps.  From the Arri website:  0,75 - 200 Fps (progressive) HD, 2K.      You can support it easily with the Maxima:  http://www.arri.com/camera/camera_stabilizer_systems/products/maxima/  Big, yes.  Stable, very.  Not sure it’d fit your bill, but an idea.

Let us know where it pans out.
