Scam alert...Beware!!

Paul Kepner

I wanted to let everyone know that there is a scam going around and they tried to get me. Luckily I asked a few people about this and did my due diligence and found out it was 100% a scam. I checked with our bank and local police and they confirmed it was a scam. Here is a copy of the email that was sent to me so you can keep an eye out for it. I am also attaching pictures of the mailing envelope and the check that was sent to me. Again beware. If it sounds fishy then it probably is.

Thank you,

You bank the check, then pay for rentals, then the check bounces, so the rental company is the beneficiary, and you’re out a couple grand or more, right?

Generally known as a “fake check” scam.  But doesn’t this imply that whoever the renter is, is either the scammer themselves or in cahoots with the scammer? It can’t be a local reputable camera house, then.

Or you buy gear that’s shipped to the company, they abscond with it as Mitch said, and you’re on the hook. B&H or whomever gets your money, and the scammers get gear to resell.

I’m suspicious anytime the potential client gets too wordy and over-explains the job responsibilities.

It tells me that they are not actually working in the film industry or at the very least don’t know what they’re doing.

Which could be an indication that even if it’s not a scam, it will probably be a shit show.

Paul:

I notice the check is drawn on Broadway Bank of San Antonio, Texas.  Yet the film company is in Minnesota.  Big red flag.  Broadway is a small local Texas bank.  Why would this guy have an account there if he lives 2,000 miles away?

If it wasn't a weekend, I would call my own banker down at Broadway Bank and ask them if the account is an actual account there, or if it's bogus.  The routing number at the bottom of the check is the actual routing number of Broadway Bank, but who knows about the account number?  It doesn't seem to be the prefix numbers that I know Broadway Bank uses for its accounts.

You could call the bank Monday morning yourself.  Here's the bank's number:  210  283-6500.  Tell the operator you want to check a bank balance to see if a check you're holding will clear.  You don't have to actually submit the check for payment just to check to see if the check is good.

If the account, or the check itself is phony, then the amount on the check makes this crime a felony.  The district attorney in San Antonio is Joe Gonzales.  210-335-2311.  His website (https://www.bexar.org/1384/District-Attorneyhas a simple case intake form, if for any reason you want to waste any more of your time on this.

Good catch, Paul.  Best of luck to you.  Life's pretty short already, without having your valuable time wasted.
