Seeking advice on Alexa accessories

Robert L. Cunningham

All-
Longtime lurker- I mean learner- rare poster.

I am super new to the cinema world, decades in the still world. So please be patient with my ignorance, as I am aware I don’t know much, and am seeking your advice as experts.

I own an Alexa XT Studio (OpenGate) that was rented for several years, that is now back in my possession. I am seeking to set up the camera to work well for me, but could use advice on setting up a real good system so that it can conquer most any task. When it was rented, the rental house had all the accessories and I didn’t need to worry about investing in my own.

First- I sold some XR capture drives in anticipation of selling the Alexa, and when I decided to keep it, I now find myself in need of more drives. Anyone on here know of a good source for them?

Secondly- I would like to understand what some of the good accessories -necessary or preferred ones- for it are. What I mean is things like what form of range estimation is most prolific or preferred- CineTape, UDM-1, or ? What about FIZ systems? I heard that many focus-pullers own their own systems, and get to know them. Is that true? Is it worth investing in my own set? If so, what’s the pros and cons of the main competitor systems?

What are the most common or the best remote follow focus systems? What about tripod heads and sticks? On camera monitors? Etc.

What are good accessories vs ones that would work, but in the end I’d have to upgrade? (I want to buy once, buy right, rather than buy good, and have to rebuy later)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Important: !!!!!!!!!

I know that this a stupidly large and potentially ignorant line of questioning, but I have found the CML incredibly educational, and figured I would reach out to this wealth of knowledge.

I DON’T want to fill up everyone’s emails with content that would not be usefully to 90% of the people on here, so please feel free to directly email me with advice and answers rather than here, if you think that would be better. My email is RLCUNN2@...

The Accessory Question should really be directed to AC’s.

Ask here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CameraAssistantAKSFAQ/

and here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CameraSoft/

I’ll add you as a member to the first one. You have to “apply” to SoFT … but I will Approve you.
