SSD reader/odyssey reader

Nicolas Villegas

Hello,

I arrived last night in LA to work on a documentary. We’re working with an Odyssey 7Q, but unfortunately the reader for the SSD disks didn’t make it. Is there a place, preferably near Silver Lake where I can get a Dock or reader for them? Looking to buy or borrow until the 27th of April. Also any recommendations for places to get drives for buck ups (Best Buy)?

Thank you,

Nicolás Villegas H.

Let’s call them Buck Ups from now on.  In the meantime, if you can wait a day, I’d purchase the drives from OWC/MacSales.  Buy them now, you’ll have them tomorrow.  I like these in the 6tb version for most of my needs:  https://eshop.macsales.com/Search/?q=OWCME3&filter.dimension_type_135=Bare%20Enclosure%20Only

Hello,

I’ve also used this one, can get it from Amazon for pretty cheap. Haven’t had an issue with it yet.

Cheers!

A simple SSD to USB3 costs about $15 and you can get them all over the place.

I have the full-on thunderbolt adapter for my Odyssey transfers but I often jut use one of the many cable I described above instead.

Cheers

Thank you all for the feedback. I’m heading to Fry’s to get what I need. It’s my first time in over 20 years in LA, so if you have some suggestions on things to see and do, provided I have the time, bring them on.

Cheers,

Thank you for the offer. We’ll get an adapter since it is not the last time they can use it, but I will contact you in case there’s a problem.

Best wishes,

n.

There are multiple SSD readers that can work with our SSD’s.

If the SSD’s are our original SSD’s (with our label on the SSD), then many SSD readers will work.

If the SSD’s are Samsung SSD’s then you can can use a StarTech 2.5” SSD reader.

This is the only USB Powered SSD reader that is recommended for use with the Samsung SSD’s. We extensively tested many others a few years ago and found problems. You need to use a USB 3.0 Port that can output 1 amp, which is the specification for USB 3.0 ports. USB 2.0 ports do not provide this level of power. Some older computers do not always have 1 amp available on a continuous basis.

If you use a quality SSD Dock or Reader that is AC powered, then it may work fine.

If you use a Thunderbolt SSD Reader then it will probably work fine also.

The reason we are being very careful in recommending only one USB powered SSD reader, is that the Samsung SSD’s can draw a lot of power, and if the SSD Reader also draws a lot of power, then you will have problems.

However, our recommended SSD Reader will work fine. Some of our Dealers may have our SSD Reader in stock.

Respectfully,

Had the same problem once and I just went to a computer store and bought an enclosure and pulled the reader out of the box. Works great. Cost chump change.

For a long-term solution, I heartily endorse the Blackmagic MultiDock. Thunderbolt interface, with four 2.5” bays for SATA drives. I keep a 7400 rpm spinning disk in bay 1 with all client’s brand files and common stock shots and graphics. Bay 2 is the project drive, for FCP, AE and PSD files. The other two are for SSDs straight off the Shogun. If I need a 5th drive I go to the $15 USB-3 dongle.

Thinking about getting another MultiDock...for additional source SSDs during renders.
