Update on camera evaluation

Geoff Boyle

We start on Monday and have Arri Alexa, BMD UMP, maybe another BMD, Canon C200, Canon C700 FF, Kinefinity Terra, Kinefinity Mavo, Panosonic Varicam Pure, maybe an EVA some issues there, Sony Venice, maybe FS5-2 not sure, 200T & 500T Kodak Vision 3.
Maybe another camera from elsewhere.
It looks like no RED cameras. In the past I've gone out of my way and hired them or paid people to fly to the tests with their personal cameras. I'm not doing this again. Every other manufacturer helps.
I know that Graeme is keen to see what we get from the cameras but...

If anyone has a Gemini and/or a Monstro and fancies popping in to UWE next Thursday....

Then Graeme needs to talk to the people running the place and get a

It is ludicrous that you've had to fund getting a RED to the tests in
the past.

Screw them.

RED is vindictive, and they seem to have long memories. They aren't giving Geoff a camera.

It's too bad, because now they actually make half-decent cameras.

I was at Foxconn Milwaukee ground breaking last week. They were showing off 8K panels of all sizes ( and quality ) implying they would be made here, we’ll see. there were a number of Sharp 8K cams, and RED showed up with about 6 people and a bare bones camera feeding a monitor wall. This was totally out of their realm for customers but they still showed up with people… ok Foxconn I think builds their camera boards AFAIK. Another company here makes the camera housings. Either way shouldn’t be a big deal for them to pack up a 6K or 8K camera in a case and ship it to you for a week.

I don't think it's anything to do with historical arguments i had with JJ.

I always got on well with the guys at RED UK.

They had huge changes at Pinewood in November and the changes seem to be continuing.

Everyone i knew has gone, but it looks like they're heading in the right direction there now.

Which half of the RED camera is decent? (ducks and runs)

Oh my. :) They look pretty darned good. They're still a bit noisy for my tastes, but pretty. My issues lately have all been hardware related. As a former assistant of mine used to say, "Every serial number is also a model number." There are some things I can often count on not working, and there are occasionally some new surprises.

There doesn't seem to be a way around the fact that you still get what you pay for. And I believe RED just slashed prices by something like 50%.

But when they work, one can make pretty pictures with them more easily than one could before. And they work well most of the time.

It really depends on the rental company or owner. But to be honest
whenever a new camera or upgrade is released on the market, they are
beta versions, and the AC prays they work well as well.

My 2 cents

That’s annoying about the EVA1 and the Gemini as (personally) those are the two new cameras I’m most interested in seeing a comparison of.

My EVA1 is with me in the U.K. at present and I probably won’t need it till Wednesday at the earliest. But I’m not sure of the practicalities of getting it to you.

I’m assuming the Kinefinity cameras are coming from ProAV, do they not have an EVA1 they could bring along too?

Otherwise I could maybe ask around if any local owners could help. This is in Bristol, right?

The issue with the EVA is that I’m only testing cameras with PL mounts, Panasonic UK will not put a wooden camera mount on a demo camera. Panasonic US is trying to help but it’s a nightmare of paperwork etc.

As for the Gemini & Monstro, well, a Monstro may appear, it could be stolen, err, “borrowed” from a film set 😊 I can’t arrange this with the Gemini.

If you know anyone you can harass at RED then you’re welcome to.

Ah, okay. Nigel Wilkes at Panasonic U.K. has told me you could call him to organise. But I guess you’re already in contact over this. My EVA1 will be useless I’m afraid as I’m not buying a PL mount until I need one.

I’m afraid I don’t know anyone at Red. I’m just a nobody with a big mouth.

Is there not someone here would is in touch with Graeme Nattress or someone senior at Red who could put the screws on Red UK to help out?

Has anyone contacted Red UK? I'm happy to drop an email to my rep, but i would assume others have better contacts here.

Sadly i'm not around and only have a Helium, not these fancy Geminis or Monstros!

We now have an EVA with PL mount Nigel at Panasonic UK has organised this for us and it’s coming from outside.

Still working on RED but a Monstro is looking hopeful, not so hot on the Gemini.

not so hot on the Gemini

I'm talking to CVP about maybe buying the Gemini, they have promised me a test day. I can see if they will let me take it out? Would one day be enough and if so what day - is it London based?

Sounds like you’re not talking to the right people at RED. They have completely restructured much of their Biz Dev team in Hollywood and I believe they would be able to find a camera for you if ones available.

The tests are in Bristol UK so I'm talking to RED Pinewood.

However, i am also in contact with people elsewhere who could fix it if they were inclined to.
