Lenses for camera evaluations

Geoff Boyle

I may not be able to get the lenses I was intending to use for the camera evaluations so I’m checking what is out there.

Apart from Zeiss Signature, Sigma Cine & Tokina Vista are there any other lenses that cover both S35 & FF and come in PL mount?

I know that the Canon Primes are converted to PL in some cases but I don’t think I can get them, unless you know differently 😊

Cheers

Maybe we can sweet talk Les into a set of S7s for the test.  Fantastic lenses that would be ideal for this project.  I’d love to see them up there across all of your camera choices.

There are a number of sets of Leica R-mount lenses floating around that have either had PL mt flanges put on them or been totally rehoused.  They, of course, cover VistaVision…

More private ownership than rental houses I’d imagine but even the ones that were not rehoused are fine for this sort of thing - just not great for pulling focus due to short throw.

Yeah, trying to do the entire DR in one lighting setup is causing a few issues 😊

I’m already going to a 22.5 degree shutter and I’m kinda bothered by the implications of that already.

T1.4 at a 180 degree shutter to T22 at a 22.5 degree shutter.

change the frame rate for the extremes   you don’t have to test motion for every single exposure…

I usually do exposure wedges with a combination of aperture and frame rate (shutter angle if the camera allows it)  but trying to avoid opening up too far as some lenses lose some contrast at very low f/ numbers and I want to test the film or the sensor not the lens.

Brain fade, my first post should have said Zeiss Supreme not Signature which is ARRI.

Unfortunately it looks like we may not be able to get the Supremes hence the request.

Zeiss CP.2 Superspeeds meet the spec requirements and should be readily available just about anywhere. However wide-open at T/1.5, they're not much better than a thirty year old Superspeed wide-open - so a bit soft and bloomy.

I'd think there should be some sets of the Sigmas out in the wilds of the UK by now. They're a nice choice for this because they're terrific optically (even wide open), and they'll cover everything.

No. Summilux-C are not full frame, they're S35 (33mm image circle). That's why Cine Wetzler came out with the Thalia's, which are full frame (actually larger 60mm image circle for 65mm sensors) but the fastest is a T2.2.
