Next lens tests

Geoff Boyle

Having started to get over the hell of the camera tests I find I need more pain so I’m looking at lens tests in January.

I originally intended to test only FF T1.4 or so lenses, however, this excludes some very good FF lenses so I’m now proposing two groups.

Group one at cameras base ISO at T1.4 or so

Group two at cameras higher ISO at T3.3 or so

All to be shot FF but downscaled to S35 in camera and recorded in a 400mbps’ish codec

Subject will be a model hopefully either in https://madamamsterdam.nl/skybar/  or on the roof https://www.adamlookout.com/ I haven’t approached then yet but in January early in the week I think we’ll be able to reach a deal 😊

Frame size of model will be held constant with background varying. 25mm, 50mm & 100mm

We will have huge time pressures as it will be fully dark at 6pm and we will be thrown out at well, the roof closes at 10pm the bar later.

I’m trying to work out a setup that uses http://www.solidgripsystems.eu/products2/twindolly/twinkit/ to enable us to quickly move to pre-set positions on lens changes.

If we are interior we will use candles foreground and at various distances if exterior than battery powered versions.

Group one lenses… Sigma, Vista, Celere, CP3, Supreme?, Signature?

Group two lenses… Cooke 7i, Leica Thales, Angeniuex EZ1 & EZ2, Fujinon Premiere 18-85 with expander

There are lens mount issues with the Signatures, maybe there will be adapters available by then.

What am I missing ?

It'd be great to see the Zeiss CZ.2 zooms in with the Group 2 lenses. To see how the available full frame zooms compare to the various prime sets that are out in the world now.

Hi Geoff

Group 1
Genesis G35 speeds are interesting.  They are also FF and the 25- 85mm are all T1.4, the 20mm is T1.8
The Leitz Prime lens would be amazing, assuming there is a prototype available for this (sounds like early next year is possible)
The Leitz M0,8 lens set has expanded and is high speed, FF.  There you have to deal with borrowing a Leica M mount for your camera though.
Canon CN-E primes, maybe  - most of the set is high speed, but I know they are EF mount unless you do a PL conversion

Unless this is a "no vintage" test, the Canon K-35 would be interesting also for Group 1.  The latest TLS rehousing of the 24mm covers FF.
The Cinescope/TLS Leica R could be in Group 1/ 2, the Summilux-R 35, 50, 80mm are T1.4

Group 2
Duclos/ Leica-R 70-180 Zoom is FF
all 3 Zeiss Compact/ Cinema Zooms are FF
Ultra Optimo 12x FF assuming its ready
Leitz Zooms assuming there is a prototype

Still working on which lenses will be included 😊

Trying to include as many as possible and learning more all the time about what is best to shoot to show what I want to see!

I was in Brussels last week with Carey from Cooke attending some tests of 1.8* & 2* anamorphics with 7i’s and Classic Panchro’s.

Really interesting stuff that I will be posting but not until after Cameraimage when Cooke will be showing them for the first time.

Studio, daylight exterior and night exterior.

I’ll upload both the finished Cooke videos and the RAW footage.
