Since adopting the new CML platform we seem to be seeing a lot more of these misunderstandings because it's now more of a bother to include the original quote.

I think Mako's approach is probably the easiest way to get around this: Paste in the relevant quote, then insert a row of asterisks or hyphens, then write the reply. Easy-peasy.
