2KW DMX dimmer suggestion

Steve Oakley

Any recommendations for a 120V 2KW single channel DMX dimmer ? need 2 for flashing a couple lights on and off in in sync to music track. going to use ableton for playback into USB->DMX adapter. this needs to be simple / cheap. I don't need a 48ch big dimmer, I don't have the power for it.  just want to put one of these little dimmers in line with a couple 1K DP lights behind full silks for some flashy light effects. I need key light levels so some smaller lights won't be enough.

since I'll probably buy these and toss them into the use once every couple years gear pile, cheap matters.  local AV lighting rental place doesn't have any so I'd consider rental + shipping for the right price. I considered LED but the one light I'd consider buying X2 doesn't have DMX right now, its lower powered vers does. Renting something like a pair of sky panels S60's + transport costs way more than buying a couple dimmers since nearest rental is 3-4 hrs each way + tolls, chicago area.

You might try something like this https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/751526-REG/CHAUVET_PRO_D6_Pro_D6_Dimmer_Pack.html

It has 2 inputs so you can power it from 2 20A circuits - keep in mind it probably has 20amp plugs which have one of the blades on the plug at 90 degrees from the other. You'll likely need an adapter as most household outlets have 15amp plugs or you could simply replace the 20amp plugs with 15amp plugs, realizing of course that if you put the maximum load on the dimmer you'll be overloading the outlet, if not the circuit. But in your stated use you will be well within the limitations of a 15amp outlet.

interesting find !  the ones I saw were smaller,  2KW total load, but 500W per ch X 4 which didn’t do me much good.

If you can split the 1K lights onto separate circuits, this one might work. It’s 1200W per channel, with 4 channels, 2400W max total. I have a slightly different model of it, and it was worked great for me. Most of their models are available at B&H. I run it via an ENTEC USB/DMX adapter and the Lightkey software from a MacBook Pro. Just for those little extra effects on a set, nothing fancy.

RatPac dimmers makes single channel 2k dimmers w/dmx built in. You can also stick a wireless Cintenna into it for wireless.

I’d pick up a couple of these.

There only 1.2kw so you’d need twice as many, but they are quiet, reliable and adjustable. They also work great for dimming electronic ballasts like bi-color quasars.
