Gobo's and a large source

Jonathon Sendall

What is the largest (in terms of power) source of studio light that I can attach a lens and gobo to?
I know of theatre 2K's that can be lensed, but sure about gobo's though. Would love an HMI but
maybe that's wishing to much. I know about cucoloris and using real objects for shadows but
was just checking out for a long throw and control of focus over the shadow.

Cheers

Pani HMI followspots have a gobo holder… I know there is a 1200w one - maybe larger as well.

Any xenon or HMI followspot could likely be rigged with a stainless steel gobo since they can be focused on the iris or the chopper shutters - would not be hard to rig a gobo in there either

How about a Jo-Leko? Not sure if you can do 1600 watt, but we use the 800 watt HMI version a lot. Takes a standard Source 4 gobo and readily available.

Try a Robert Juliat followspot, they have a gobo slot. Available up to 4kW HMI. They also have conventional theatre profile spots that are up to 2.5kW HMI & 2kW tungsten. Any top end rental company should be able supply for you.

Good luck.

Graham, I forgot about the Jo-Leko, was using one just the other day but without any insert. I think that might suit.

Mark, thanks for the reference to the Pani's, they certainly look interesting and might investigate them further.
The HMI followspots might be to tight a beam for what I want. I think I might need a 50 or 40 degree opening.

Thanks all

Yes Graham, I’m sure that K-5600 is now making an adapter for their 1600 to Source 4 barrel.

1200W MSR follow-spot such as a Selecon. Very punchy and takes gobos but is long throw. Have used one bounced off mirror when straight short of space.

It appears what you need is the Robert Juliat D'Artanian zoom profile.
They offer a 29-50 degree 2500 KW MSR plus a DMX controllable dimmer shutter and lamp strike
