Lighting previz software

Geoff Boyle

Hi guys, I’ve been experimenting with some software for previz of lighting and it’s really cool, it is stills based but they seem willing to develop in a cinematography direction is there’s enough interest.

There’s a trial version good for 2 weeks, I likes it so much I actually paid for it!

I’ve been setting the camera to 1.5, 1/50, to emulate a cine camera and it works well, I’ll be uploading a clip I’ve created with it that demonstrates portrait lighting using an IKEA FLOALT. No, that is not in the lighting databases but a 60 * 60 softlight is, as are reflectors and flags. These are not intuitive, but you can alter the size of the “light blocker” to emulate a flag, you can alter the poly reflector the same way. There is a bug now where it doesn’t remember your alterations to size after you’ve rendered an image and plot but they’re working on that.

It costs about $150 for the pro version.

I’ve attached a plot generated from it, it will also export a full size still. I have used this facility to export a series of stills to build a sequence in Resolve that demonstrates various lighting setups. I’ll upload one of these later today and post a link.

Well worth looking at.
