Lights with moving beams

Dirk Nel

Hi all
im shooting a scene set on a boat that has a disco on it, the room is fairly small and the ceiling is low about 7’ the room is about 20’x20’
im looking for a lighting system similar to the mac axiom system the allows full control over colour, movement, and intensity. The mac axiom is a bit large for this purpose I think.
Im interested to hear if anyone as any experience using a similar product with a small footprint.
many thanks

To fill in The Mac Axiom is a moving light that has a HMI lamp with about 600w of total draw. Martin calls it a hybrid between a beam and a spot.

Since there are a lot of options when it comes to moving lights what attributes are you most interested in having? Obviously a bit smaller (the axiom is about 2’ tall when homed), but are you looking for more or less light output? What features beyond pan/ tilt control and CMY color mixing are most important to you?

There’s a big world out there in moving lights and a few narrowing parameters would be helpful in getting you the best suggestions.

you probably need to find out how much power is available first, its likely rather limited. you should also figure out  if you  need or can  add a genny on board, rig lighting outside off speed rail or small truss ? power may be a much bigger driver of what lighting you can use. with the lower end lighting fixtures, beware of flicker if shooting over 60fps
