"Large format" is a misnomer/what's the big deal?
Axel Gimenez
Before I dive in....
1) I understand cameras are tools, it's not the camera's fault :) 2) I want to test but I don't have access to an Alexa LF 3) Over the short time I've been working, my clients don't actually care what camera I use (seriously don't) but my contemporaries can't stop talking about this stuff. What's the big deal and why is everyone talking about large-format? The sensor is only the size of 35mm film, right? That's not much bigger than super-35 sensors. Shouldn't the Alexa 65 be called "Large format"? And what about 120 "medium format" film? Isn't that like four times as large as the Alexa 65? Here's where the testing comes in - couldn't you lens an Alexa Mini to look like an LF by using a different focal length? I don't get it. But that's only from reading and seeing what people are doing with "Large Format" cameras. (would like to try/test one day to give my rant some more weight). I feel like a crazy person. Thanks. Axel

This article explains it with some side-by-side comparisons. https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/566917601fe1e3d958ae91e0/5a7d39de8f34de0001ef4bf7_DOF-3-images-6_1.jpg - this shows the difference quite well too. Xiaosu Han cinematographer, Vienna, Austria www.stilfabrik.at

Steve Yedlin did a test some years ago comparing different resolutions, formats and cameras. He compared, s35, FF and 65 formats. I encourage you to take a look at it: If you go to his homepage you will see other tests he did comparing Film with digital cameras on Color Science. Agustín Barrutia (ADF)

The Yedlin tests/demos are amazing, and I found them particularly eye opening. I don't code or use Scratch (haven't had the "scratch" to buy a license), but I've been looking for a way to automate some of the things he does to make the Alexa look almost indistinguishable from film like gate weave and halation, but haven't found anything close. Filmconvert works for what it is, but nowhere near the custom scripts Yedlin created. If anyone has something that works in Resolve please do share...
