Slowing down 25fps footage by 50-100%

Adrian Wolfson

Hi Everyone

I shot some footage of a person walking around corridors and meeting people and I've been asked to slow this footage down a little. It's shallow depth of field shot on Super Speeds and we do see faces of people.

I think 25fps to 50fps max but it will probably be less of a change. It's just to give it a bit of a more ethereal feeling.

So I was wondering what software you would recommend to do this. I was testing Twixtor in After Effects but wondered what settings were best. Or do you think Nuke or other software would be better.

Thank you in advance for your wisdom.

Adrian

Hi Geoff

I put all my details in the identity pages so I thought they would add my signature automatically. Is that what it's for?

Thanks

Hi Adrian

After Effects, Premiere and FCPX all have a built in optical flow retimer as an option, and it can be pretty good. Twixtor is a step up, but the Nuke guys I speak to all prefer Kronos.

To get automatic results, it's easy in any of the programs, but to achieve the best retiming results requires quite a lot of roto work to tell the software what is background/foreground etc.

Depends how perfect it needs to look.

Grass Valley Quantel RIO with the built-in Snell "Alchemist" retiming method is another possibility, or eventually try the new Optical Flow in da Vinci Resolve 15.
