SSD/HD docks for on set transcode/cloning

Peter Keenan

Hello,
My question is in regards to "on set" SSD/HD docks for cloning or transcoding.
Does anyone have a recommendation? We obviously give the editor a brand spanking new hard drive each and every job but we are trying to figure out a smaller footprint for the redundant storage.  Has anyone had any experience with these types of appliances?  I have seen this particular unit: StarTech, standalone USB 3.1 duplicator dock for 2.5" & 3.5" SATA SSD/HHD.
Just curious if there's an industry standard.
Many thanks,
Peter Keenan

Hi Peter,

I have been loving the Atech flash Blackjet. It allows me to raid 2 SSDs and access it via USB 3.1 gen 2. The thing is built like a tank. I can use it as a dual SSD toaster in JBOD mode or as a 1 GB/s shuttle drive. I used it on a Phantom job recently as a shuttle between the tech and myself and the data speed allowed me to transcode Phantom raw at 120fps. It actually finished transcoding before finishing copying to the client drive.

I've had bad luck with cheap SSD interfaces and have been happy with the more robust pro solutions provided by atech flash. They also have some 1U rack options available. Hope it helps.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks so much for this info.  I am but a lowly producer and having advice from a working Shooter/DIT (international to boot!) helps with the research.  I will add this recommendation to the pile and let everyone know on this list where we ended up.

Thank you!

Just to keep the group informed.  I received a private message from a Mr. Gonen Ravid.  He sent a link to the Media Masster 102 PRO-IT.  It's a $1,995.00 device .  For anyone wanting to see the details, here is the link: http://ics-iq.com/media-masster-102-pro-it/
