Nick, What’s your opinion of using the system gamma as the starting grade versus no grade, for non-expert users?
I'm not a colourist, and at the end of the day whatever gets you to the place you want to be is the right way for you!
But I don't know if you can talk about "system gamma vs no grade". Since system gamma is an optical to optical transfer function, it is an inherent property of the difference between the camera encoding function, and the display EOTF. So in that sense it is the same thing as "no grade".
I personally prefer the ACES (ACEScct) approach of grading in a log space, with picture rendering (i.e. the RRT) applied downstream of the grade, and viewed and rendered "thorough" a suitable output transform.
