To get log gamma back to something looking good at 2.4, I finessed a custom curve in regular "YRGB" space, just with all four channels linked.

Then, to pull the chrominance out for an SGamut source to a 709 target, I switch to LAB color space and then just finesse the "A" and "B" curves. By doing this, you get a lot more control than just cranking the Saturation control in YRGB.
