Dolby Vision and HDR
Dirk Nel
hi
im trying to get my head around Dolby Vision and understanding the differences between Dolby Vision and HDR, what the pros and cons are, and the fundamental differences. I’m aware that Dolby Vision utilises HDR but if there are any links that may explain further and clearly I’d appreciate a heads up. many thanks dirk Nel DOP www.dirknel.com london based

Hello, Robert. I have a question about Dolby Vision.

Can you point out a streaming series or two on Netflix (only streaming service I have) or any UHD Blu Rays that you/Dolby consider to be noteworthy examples of the use of Dolby Vision? I have a calibrated LG 65E6 set on which to display them. Thanks. -Bob Bob Kertesz

Wondering if Sony Catalyst Browse lists SGamut/SLog2 as "User defined curve9"
Seth Goldin
Hi folks,
I instructed a shooter with an FS7 to shoot in SGamut3.cine/SLog3, but I'm almost certain that the footage I got back is SGamut/SLog2. Catalyst Browse is telling me that the capture gamma is User defined curve9. How cryptic! Can anyone confirm that User defined curve9 is indeed SGamut/SLog2? Thanks, Seth Goldin Washington, D.C.

Re: Wondering if Sony Catalyst Browse lists SGamut/SLog2 as "User defined curve9"
As I recall, in addition to the standard set of gammas the FS7 allows you to load custom gamma curves. "User defined curve 9" would seem to be one of those... (If there's no signature it means I have the signature screwed up on the web interface....)

In theory, a "user defined curve" is just that - something the user created with a program (Catalyst Browse for example) or downloaded from someone who did and then loaded it into the camera. Without a more descriptive name, I'm not sure if it is identifiable beyond that through some sort of reverse engineering. Steven Gruen Director/Cameraman Paris, France

Thanks for this. A clue was that the "Monitoring descriptions" listed SLog2. Regardless, I created my own custom curve in Resolve. I had been hoping for a quick and easy LUT for dailies like the SGamut3.cine/SLog3 to LC709A, but a custom curve with some LAB color contrast expansion sufficed.

Unfortunately it seems that Sony is somewhat opaque when it comes to any API for XAVC, so I don't believe Resolve has any such access to reading metadata from the files. As far as I know, Catalyst programs like Browse or Prepare provide the only way to read the metadata.

Yes indeed! Since a quick LUT wasn't possible, I have two go-to adjustments for quick dailies. To get log gamma back to something looking good at 2.4, I finessed a custom curve in regular "YRGB" space, just with all four channels linked. Then, to pull the chrominance out for an SGamut source to a 709 target, I switch to LAB color space and then just finesse the "A" and "B" curves. By doing this, you get a lot more control than just cranking the Saturation control in YRGB. I picked this up from Patrick Inhofer. He has a great series on this over at Mixing Light.

I’ve used LUTCalc to create an SLog3 to LC709A LUT in the past. With the various customization features it has, it’s very simple to add a gamma tweak. Stuart Brereton DP, LA

Can confirm the LAB trick - I’ve used that a bit before. Great for playing with saturation without skin tones going crazy. Thanks for tip on LUTCalc, looks like a very handy little tool.

I've played with LAB in Photoshop and created some very cool looks with color contrasts. I didn't know it was in Resolve, although I'd long wondered why this wasn't a secret colorist tool. Maybe it was and I wasn't worthy of the secret. :) Thanks!

These are from matching frames from the July tests.
In ACES in Resolve with just the relevant IDT applied, contrast set to .85 and colour centred with offset. Alexa SXT, C300-2, C700, F55, F65, Varicam

The same settings as in the vector scope test but now with saturation levels matched to the Alexa.

Something does not make sense: Red is slightly off in all cameras? Cyan is not able to get to a saturation point in the Sonys? ? Argyris Theos, gsc DoP, Athens Greece, +306944725315 Skype Argyris.Theos via iPhone

I have always thought that there was an issue with the S-Log3 IDT in Resolve (and reported it to the Resolve team) which results in the skew you see on the F55 and F65 vectorscope images. I have converted the official Sony S-Gamut3.CIne/S-Log3 IDT into DCTL (see here on my website) and using this does not show the same skew. Geoff, I will send you my DCTL off list so you can compare.
