3D Imax, Dome Cinema Doco
EARLE DRESNER
Hello,
I am shooting a documentary in Cambodia that will be shown in 3D on Imax screens as well as in Dome cinemas. Shooting on Red VV Monstros. Any advice on shooting for these formats (dome especially). Will be testing as much as possible but would be great to hear any do’s, don'ts or experiences Thanks, Earle Dresner ACS Director Of Photography Melbourne, Australia

I’ve been shooting exclusively for Giant Screen for over 5 years. I’m also a member of GSCA Technical Committee.
Shooting for Giant Screen (IMAX) is completely different than shooting for mainstream cinema or broadcast. I mean everything is different: framing, pacing, camera movement, composition, angles, focus, lenses, everything! Initially it feels very restrictive as there are a lot of don’ts. Think about 95% of shots that you would normally consider for broadcast will not work on Giant Screen for one reason or another. For example: you can’t introduce a subject from the top of the frame as this is likely to cause neck injury to the viewers. Introducing a subject from left or right risks that two thirds of the audiences won’t see it at all and it is probably going to cause edge violation.
Then, if you are also planning for full dome extraction, then it is different yet again. You may like to choose to shoot separately for flat screens and for the dome. It is very hard in a space of an email to cover even a fraction of do’s and don’ts if you have never shot for giant screen before.
One thing I can recommend is to watch as many GS films on IMAX screen as you can and see what works what doesn’t. But, above all, I suggest hiring someone experienced to give you a hand, particularly if you are shooting 3D. The stereographer (or the DOP) needs to be familiar with GS as 3D is also very different to the 3D you would shoot for regular cinema.
I’m happy to talk in more detail. You can give me a call, if you like.
