Workflow for Arriraw files

Cruz

Edited

I just landed a job for DIT. It's my first experience in an environment like this. They are shooting with an Alexa SXT Plus.

Apart from storage they want me to:
- Transcode the files into something easy for the director/editor to look and see how it's going with rec709 applied.
- They also want me to sync the audio & video files;

What is the best way for me to do this?

Hi go for Davinci without doubt; you can make pressets for the differents exports, also the sincro is less than 2 seconds if they use timecode (tentacle o similares) if not old school with the clapboard.

Thank you for your answer Tomás! I've already nailed the workflow for the dailies with DaVinci, I'm now looking at a more robust way to have the whole process in under one app. Silverstack seems to do everything needed. Just checking if it can auto sync the audio based on timecode like DaVinci does.

Silverstack Lab (not Silverstack or XT) can do syncing based on time code like DaVinci.

It also has tools to shift sync or manually sync as well.

There have recently been improvements in syncing (a recent release note mentioned something about syncing to a second clap).

I haven’t done transcodes on set for a long time in Silverstack, but point is that it can do it.

So it is an option in order to have everything under one roof.

FWIW Sync n Link for FCP X from Intelligent Assitant is also very good and very quick.

Obviously there are other tools but it might be worth investigating.

I can imagine FCP X, Compressor and and new M1 Max MacBook Pro would be a great combination for DITs.

Greetings,

Silverstack Lab is a perfect tool for what you are looking for. It’s a multitool software. Data wrangling is straightforward. Metadata handling and annotations are simple to do. Transcoding is very simple as well, several settings already available or you can create your own custom settings. Syncing is a piece of cake, as long as timecode is matching or there is a slate so you can manually sync if necessary! However, check with the editor for the transcodes as she or he or the assistant may want files to be delivered separately. Best thing to do is to talk to whom you must deliver files and to test with the camera department prior to the shoot. Also make sure your hardware is compatible with the Software you are going to use in the end.

Cheers

Manny, Munich

I've search and made sure to know the differences and I'll be using Silverstack Lab. It only offers subscriptions up to 2 Months (or you can go the whole year), so I'll have to check what's the best option with the producer.

@Michael Sanders

I'll have to search about Sync n Link for FCP X. The M1 line should be awesome with that. I've actually did try to run the trial version of Silverstack on MacMini (with the M1) and it didn't open. They are still probably adjusting the configs to work with these new (althought it has been a year since it's launch) ships.

@Emmanuel SUYS

The director will be the one editing (at least the first version). They have asked for ProRes to check the dailies and for him to grab and start working on them. I'll be using Premiere Pro to do so.

I have to say, if Silverstack doesn’t work on M1, I’d highly recommend DaVinci for dailies.

It’s robust, many tried and true workflows and as far as I know, it’s compatible with M1.

Great speed too.

And for dailies, the free version is more than adequate. Otherwise it’s $300 last I recall for studio license.

Feel free to DM me if you need specific help in Silverstack or DaVinci.

Also, I just checked Pomfort’s website and it seems like Silverstack Lab v8 is compatible with AppleM1.

One other note. I highly recommend utilizing ArriRAW HDE to reduce media storage.

You will ideally need SSDs or high performance drives as the originating ArriRAW file get’s transformed into an image sequence in the transition to HDE and you’ll encounter reduced drive speeds because the file are 4-8 MB.

I haven’t tested a configuration in Silverstack where you can have the verification happen after the full copy instead of verifying each file as it’s copied. That may help in keeping speeds up.

Nevertheless, HDE is definitely worth exploring.
