Actual use of ARRIRAW HDE for Feature Films and Commercials.

Agustin Barrutia

Hello there!

I would like to know of real actual experiences shooting ARRIRAW and using HDE for feature films, commercials or series in the past years. Any advices or precautions we should take when working with it?

Here in Argentina local crew usually do not work with ARRIRAW nor HDE and DITs are Sceptical about working with it, as there were some bad experiences with dropped frames when doing proxies on a series some years ago.

A month ago we wrapped a movie that we did working with an Alexa XT shooting 3.4K ARRIRAW and downloading with Pomfort-Silverstack using HDE and then doing proxies on Davinci Resolve without any issues, and I’ve been using it happily for commercials with Alexa mini LF since then.

Cheers!

Hello Augustin,

In Europe, and all US feature and series (including major streamers) shot in our region, since the LF onward, HDE is almost exclusively used. Most of the arguments are because of the total storage space reduction, which translates in a lot of cost reduction for HDDs and LTO tapes per project total.

I personally have not encountered any sort of errors working with HDE, and from the DIT side, i indeed had issues, but those were mitigated during download, because of hash issues being reported.

For commercials, i have not yet seen HDE being used, but that is because of non-existent communication between production and post. Its too complicated for the producers to understand apparently, and DoPs do not quite care, as they shouldn’t. Sometimes post is surprised production shot raw, instead of prores….

The problems you mention might have been in the early stages of HDE, but also as a combination of not using the right software, firmware versions for the codex, proper verification, etc.

I’ve done 2 features with HDE, it’s fine but not great.

Total offload speeds are around 600-700mbps; it gets tricky when you’re shooting 3+ cams; if storage isn’t a problem I’d rather have straight arriraw. Although I’ve pushed for it when production couldn’t afford storage to get raw for my DPs

This post has some good information regarding possible checksum issues:

I’m a bit late to this, so sorry about that! A number of the streaming services use HDE for their productions. It’s extremely common for productions that shoot ARRIRAW. I’ve not heard of anyone having any problems with it.

I’ve been using HDE quite a bit myself as I edit and color grade on a Mac laptop, pulling data across a LAN, and HDE works exceptionally well at the data rates that this combination allows.
