Recording to SSD on Sony FX3

patancillo@...

I'm working on film mostly on a gimbal with a Sony FX3 but I'm having a hard time sourcing media cards that can handle XAVC
S-I 4K.
Does anybody know if it is possible to record on an SSD drive connected to the USB port of the Sony FX3?

No, you cannot record via the USB slot. You could consider an external recorder via HDMI.

For up to 60fps you should be able to use any v90 class SD card for XAVC-S-I, you should be able to find these. You only need the CF Express Type A cards for above 60fps.

I've been using a Blackmagic Pocket 4K which makes offboard recording to commonly available Samsung SSDs easy - with a couple of 1TB SSDs, I don't have to worry too much about storage for that camera.    Of course, it also means attaching the SSD to a cage that securely clamps the USB cable so it doesn't accidentally come unseated in the middle of a take... So I can see why not every manufacturer thinks that's a great idea.

I now also have an FX3, and I do want to be able to overcrank which means Type A cards at a really premium price.

Ultimately, depending on your needs, it will likely be handy to have SD cards for regular speed and Type A for overcrank when you need it.   I haven't actually tried any SD cards in the FX3 yet, but there are a lot more options at a lot more attractive price points than the CF Express Type A.

Isn't the Atoms Ninja a good setup for the FX3?

Since Claudio is using the camera mostly on a gimbal, I'm not sure that adding a recording monitor that's larger than the camera itself is the solution he's looking for.

Before the Pocket 4K and now FX3, I used an A7sII on a gimbal, and connecting it to an external recorder always slowed down the whole process.  At least an external SSD on the Pocket 4K is compact and lightweight.

Would the Video Devices Pix E5 or E5H, work? I love my little Pix E5. I mostly still use my Odyssey 7Q+ for beefier codecs. The Pix E5 series still packs a punch!

Thanks @George Hupka, you are correct, adding any more devices (and power sources for them) would make gimbal  work impractical.
This particular film calls for long takes, hours on end, shooting unreharsed and improvised scenes involving children. After a few minutes every gram on the gimbal counts. I love the FX3's capabilities, size and weight, but sometimes sourcing the media is not as easy in countries where you can't go to a local computer store and get something as exotic as a fast card. Blackmagic's approach to recording in widely available SSD media is a great idea. I wish more camera manufacturers would embrace it.

I spent some time in Argentina shooting a wildlife documentary in 1996 - Alta Italia.  Now that's a small town in the middle of the Pampas  :)

The good news is that it doesn't sound like you need high frame rates for this job, so you should have a much easier time finding SD cards than the CF Express cards...
