[spam] [raw-log-hdr] Venice evaluation

Mark Lamble

Geoff,

Thank you for doing this series of tests.

Your standard system of charts and methodology makes basic comparisons
between cameras straightforward. I feel it gives everyone a really good
starting point for doing their own tests if using any of the cameras in
anger on a project. There is a lot of basic image information to be
gleaned from your tests. Personally when testing I try and find what I
feel are the acceptable limits of any camera and then I work within
those depending on what I am trying to achieve.

To the nit pickers, just go and do your own tests and post them for all
to see, that way you can use your own methodology rather than spending
your time criticising others. We all know we use these tools (cameras)
in many different ways and have very different tastes when it comes to
the looks and styles different cameras offer. Embrace those differences
and enjoy the great range of imperfect tools we have have to work with
to create our images.

Thanks again Geoff,

Mark

I’m not criticising Geoff’s methodology. I made a point of saying how excellent I thought it was.

I’m just saying it’s a shame we don’t have +5 and -5 (or even +6 and -6) for the Alexa as it means we don’t really know how far you can push it, so it makes it hard to compare.

It’s complicated by Sony’s decision to rate the Venice at ISO 500. Is this done purely to improve the apparent noise performance? Who knows. At the moment the only comparison I trust is Geoff’s. It’s just a shame we can’t truly compare DR to the market leader at the moment.

But yes. I would love to do my own testing at some point. But as I’m sure Geoff will testify - it is quite a job organising these things!

Cheers,

I’m amazed you got the difference at +4, I’m sure I didn’t see it when I did the tests, Ah well, I’m wrong.

I will do all future tests at +/- 5 stops

It’s complicated, time consuming and expensive to do these tests.

We’ve lost a few sponsors this year, smaller companies and I know its tough out there, but this means I have to be much more careful about how, where and when I do tests.

If I do a huge batch I have to hire facilities and some crew. I don’t expect people to commit a week of their time for free. At the very least I have to house & feed them!

I can do the tests at rental companies but there is a limit to how far you can push favours!

I’d prefer to do the tests at the manufacturers facilities because that way they have no excuses. This is however a much more expensive and difficult way to do the tests.

Next test is hopefully at RED in Pinewood but I may try and pull a favour at Camalot 😊

We did do them in a film school studio for a while and that sort of worked but there were just too many people there to manage to keep focus!! Too many people asking why and wanting to talk and simple mistakes creep in as a result. We lost a whole batch of F65 rushes this way…

Apart from Monstro there’s a new Kinemax, rumours that will probably be confirmed at NAB and who knows what else! Of course when will any of those be available in the same place at the same time, I guess the future is individual tests…

Cheers
