Testing BRAW

Geoff Boyle

I’m not going to publish any results until this firmware comes out of beta, or a couple of days before Cameraimage.

I’ve found a setup that seems to work well at showing changes.

I’m shooting in full 4.6K res and then looking at an HD crop. The image is trees blowing in the wind, quite a lot of wind I am after all in the land of windmills! And buildings in the background as well as lots of sky.

When I look at playback there is a noticeable change in the resolution of the brick work from codec to codec. I am shooting all 3 varieties of CDNG, 6 varieties of BRAW and just for the hell of it 2 versions of ProRes.

I’ll eventually upload the HD cropped output to cmltests.net but I’m not sure what format it will be, probably 10bit DPX.

There’s no point in doing H264’s because that’ll mask the differences, mind, for the 25% who watch tests on their dumbphone…

Geoff Boyle

I’ve spent quite a while looking at these images now.

I’m going to shoot more tests but with a narrow shutter angle.

I want sharp images but I also want a large part of the shot to be moving fine detail.

I want to make sure that the fine brickwork and poster that I’m looking at in the blown up frames aren’t softened by motion blur.

I think if I get this right then simple split screen TIFF’s will clearly show the differences.

I’m also detecting colour differences between the CDNG and the BRAW, I guess that shouldn’t be a surprise. I’ll measure and quantify that as well.
