V-LOG to BT.2020 Conversion LUT

Ulf Soderqvist

Hello Friends,

I am searching for a conversion LUT for V-LOG to BT.2020 to load on to Lumix S1H and also for BMD mini converter. Any ideas where to look? Panasonic only has to 709.

Ofcourse.  Would that be the GBP 65 lut management version?

Not a Mac person. I see there are a bunch of LUT generator apps out there. Question is how accurate and professional.

The main question is what you want to transform to and how. V-Log is a transfer function (curve) normally paired with V-Gamut primaries. It is a scene-referred encoding. BT.2020 specifies a set of display primaries, and may be paired with various EOTFs (display curves) - ST.2084 (PQ), HLG, or an SDR EOTF (normally 2.4 gamma).

So you need to define which of these you need. And once you have, there is still no one “right” way to transform to it. ACES is the only open standard way to to do it. But there are many other options - DaVinci DRT, FilmLight T-Cam, etc, as well as camera manufacturer specific transforms.

So it’s not just a question of what software to use. It’s a question of what you want to do, which is both a technical and creative choice.

Sorry if I’m adding to your confusion!

I'm not familiar with V-log but I have used LUTCalc a lot and its great. I didn't realize it had been updated so it does have settings for V-log and rec 2020.
I'm sure It will get you there. Everything needs a little post adjustment anyway.

Thank you Nick for clarifying and sure adding to the confusion. Lol. Anyhow, this is what I need to do. It is live production, so no post.  UHD camera signal to Ultimatte 4K. From Ultimatte to Decklink card and color grading in Assimilate Scratch. NDI with graded foreground and Matte for live composite in UE5. The ultimatte is operating in either 709 or 2020. I'd prefer 2020 ro retain a wider gamut. So a natural 2020 out of camera is what I try to achieve.
